The Pre-Nursing program is designed for high school or college students who intend to apply for admission to the UWI-CFBC Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program but have not met the matriculation requirements. A student who meets the admission requirements is eligible to apply to the BSN program.
The program is comprised of eleven (11) credits and is divided into foundation and pre-requisite courses that provide the knowledge base, transferable skills and general competence to allow students to progress successfully into the Bachelor of Science in nursing program.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the Pre-Nursing Program, students will be able to:
- Acquire matriculation requirements for the UWI-CFBC Bachelor of Science in nursing degree program.
- Develop his/her academic skills including critical thinking and learning habits to facilitate entry into the BSN program.
- Advance his/her academic potential for undergraduate study.
- Recognize the importance of and continuous need to seek educational opportunities in order to advance their personal and professional career pathway.
At the end of the program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a new perspective on academic abilities and potential.
- Apply for admission to the UWI-CFBC Bachelor of Science in nursing program
OR
- Use the certificate to apply to other programs within the college including the Enrolled Nursing Assistant program.
The curriculum structure is based upon the unique situation for individual students depending on the subject areas required for matriculation as indicated below:
CSEC subjects – Division of Adults and Continuing Education
Pre-Nursing courses – Division of Health Sciences
Foundation courses – UWI, Open Campus, St. Kitts
GENERAL PRE-NURSING REGULATIONS
Candidates for the Pre-Nursing Program would register as part-time students.
- Candidates must register for courses at the beginning of the academic year.
- Candidates will register in the Division of Adults and Continuing Education for the CSEC subjects and in Division of Health Sciences for the pre-nursing science courses.
- Candidates have the option to register for the foundation courses with the UWI, Open Campus, St. Kitts.
Candidates may register for a minimum of one CSEC subject and a maximum of five CSEC subjects. The maximum number of CSEC subjects for which a student may be registered is determined by the schedule.
Upon completion of the Pre-Nursing program students who pursue the foundation courses will be awarded exemption of up to nine (9) credits towards the UWI-CFBC Bachelor of Science in nursing degree program.
The duration of the Pre-Nursing Program is one year. However, individuals must complete the program within a maximum time span of two years. Allowance for an additional year to complete the program for the BSN entry will be considered on an individual basis.
Progress through the Program
Candidates must successfully complete all course requirements they have registered for in Semester 1 to progress to Semester 2.
In order to be eligible for entry to the Pre-Nursing program candidates must have:
- Attended secondary school but did not attempt any subjects for Caribbean
Examination Council (CSEC) Examination
OR
- Obtained passes in the Caribbean Examination Council (CSEC) Examination or the General Certificate Examination (GCE) Ordinary Level or approved equivalent in at least THREE (3) subjects, including:

- English Language
- Mathematics
- Biology or Human & Social Biology
- and one subject from Agricultural Science, Geography, Caribbean History, A Modern Language, Social Studies, Religious Education, Food & Nutrition, Home Economic Management, Principle of Accounts, Principles of Business, English Literature, Business Studies, Information Technology, Physics, Chemistry or Psychology.

- Be at least 16 years at the time of admission to the program.
- Applicants may also be required to submit to a personal interview and provide two (2) letters or recommendation and two (2) passport size photographs.
- Applicants must submit the original and a copy of the following documents, along with a printout of their application:
- Original birth certificate or passport or citizenship certificate
- Original CXC/GCE examination certificate (s) or results slip (s), if applicable
- Provide transcripts of secondary or tertiary level education.
- Note Well: Applicants having more than two CXC or CSEC subjects at grade three (III) passes or more than two subjects with a C pass in the GCE Ordinary Level subjects would be required to upgrade subject areas within the two -year period. (Only two CSEC subjects at grade III or GCE O’ Level subjects at grade C are accepted for matriculation into the BScN program).
*If the applicant has only 3 subject areas passes, he/she will have to complete 2 subject areas within the one-year period along with other stipulated prerequisite courses in the program.
Specially Admitted Students, UWI Open Campus
- Students must achieve passes in English and Mathematics at CXC CSEC Level or equivalent to be eligible to register as a Specially Admitted Student.
- Students have the option to register for the Improving Math Skills course. However, the student must have passed English.
- Students can only register for two foundation courses in a given semester.
- Students are eligible for exemption of up to nine credits towards the UWI-CFBC Bachelor of Science in nursing degree program.
CERTIFICATION OF COMPLETION
A certificate of completion will be awarded upon completion of the program.
Graduates are eligible to apply for the UWI-CFBC Bachelor of Science in nursing program or any other programs at the college including the Enrolled Nursing Assistant program.
