Welcome to the Division of Arts, Science & General Studies!
The Division of Arts, Science and General Studies (ASGS), prepares students for the CXC Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE). CAPE is the equivalent of the Cambridge Advanced Level Examinations and is recognized as such nationally, regionally and internationally.
CAPE subjects are arranged as 1-Unit or 2-Unit courses. Each Unit consists of three modules and requires approximately 150 hours of work. This includes contact time and time spent on labs, research projects and other assignments.
A 2-Unit course of study in a single subject area is considered equivalent to a traditional Advanced Level (A’ Level) subject. All students are advised to take AT LEAST two 2-Unit courses as this is the minimum university entry requirement. Internal and external assessments are required for each Unit. These assessments effectively span the three modules and students are required to successfully complete both the internal and external requirements for the unit of study.
CAPE DIPLOMA
ASGS students pursue studies to earn the CAPE Diploma. A minimum of six Units, including Caribbean and Communication Studies and 2-2 Unit subjects, must be successfully completed for the award of the CAPE Diploma. Students may, however, take additional Units if they wish. This award will be based on performance at Grades I to V, typically over a period of two years.
CAPE ASSOCIATE DEGREE OPTION
To be awarded the CAPE Associate degree, students may choose to successfully complete ten Units, selected in accordance with specifications, typically over a period of 3 years but within a five year period. CXC Associate Degree courses are separated into four bands: general education or compulsory courses, core courses based on
specialization, adjunct or supporting courses, and an elective.
CAPE CERTIFICATION
Each CAPE Unit can be certified separately; thus a certificate is issued for each examination sitting. A separate Diploma and/or Associate Degree certificate is issued when students satisfy the prescribed criteria.
